Woman preaching at the hippies in Golden Gate Park
Summer of Love — 1968 — San Francisco, California.
While my friend and years-later studio-mate, Robert Altman, was in the middle of the crowd of people dancing naked to the music of a free concert, I was drawn to this Latina preaching to no one in particular from a prayer book in Spanish, while another misbegotten celebrant looked on at just the right dimension to amplify the coefficient of strangeness that attracted me to this human geometry.

When I think of this time in the parallel lives of these amazing cities NewYork & San Francisco, this image reminds me of the joy that it was like to be in bi-coastal in the 1970s.
After trudging through black slush for what seemed like months in Manhattan, it was very cool to be warm in the middle of winter, if only for the length of a lunch-break.
